Our History and Major Milestones |
|
Leaders of Tomorrow, Inc., sprang from the vision, the devotion to
youth, and the sheer determination of Dennie Butler-MacKay, LICSW.
As a social worker in Boston-area school based programs for
seven years, Dennie gained first-hand insight into the challenges
facing today's youth. From this experience arose her dream of
establishing a strong, comprehensive model for school based student
support services provided by an outside agency, which could augment the
existing service structure.
1996 -
Following her dream, Dennie designs and implements a pilot series of
prevention workshops at Brighton (MA) High School. In short time,
"Leaders of Tomorrow" (known informally as "Leaders") has expanded its
service area to include Jackson Mann Elementary School in neighboring
Allston.
1997 - A training program for select Boston University
School of Social Work interns is initiated offering social work
placements in both the elementary and the high schools.
2000 -
Responding to growing support and enthusiasm for the program and its
services, Leaders incorporates in April as the nonprofit organization
"Leaders of Tomorrow, Inc."
2000 - In July, Thanks to the
supportive investigation by Jackson Mann principal Joanne Collins
Russell, Ed. D., Leaders moves into permanent office space in Allston.
2001
- The organization's then-four-member Board of Directors holds its
first annual meeting in January. The organization receives its
tax-exempt 501(c)(3) status the following August.
2002 - Leaders
expands the number and diversity of its Board of Directors and
establishes several working committees to strengthen the organizational
infrastructure and allow it to meet the ever-changing needs of its
schools.
Today - With its eye firmly set on the horizon for
other opportunities to meet the evolving needs of the communities it
serves, Leaders continually works to craft the best model of school
based support services that can be offered by outside agencies and
replicated nationwide.
